The midrange mic bundle for home recording

Here’s my current choices for a fantastic midrange mic bundle for the home songwriter.

As with all of my songwriter mic bundles, I’m limiting it to just two mics, as that’s all you really need in a home music writing situation. One should be focused on vocal capture, the other on instrument capture, but both should be able to share in those duties to a certain extent.

I don’t often recommend large diaphragm condenser mics for home studio use. They’re often expensive, and they tend to be finicky to use, while picking up a lot of background noise.

However, this one makes the cut because it does a better job focusing its pickup pattern for less noise, and its got a ton of selectable features to play around with that will help you learn how different types of microphone pickup patterns sound inside of your space.

This would be a strong primary vocal mic for the home studio, and it’ll sound really nice paired with a high quality dynamic mic on a single source, like the one below.

Electro-Voice RE20

This mic is a perennial recommendation for home use, because it’s dead simple to use and sounds great at whatever you point it at. I especially like it on brass instruments and vocals, but kick drum and bass guitar cabs are also popular use cases.

This is a fully professional quality mic, but because it’s a dynamic mic design you get that super high quality at a very reasonable price when compared to a condenser design of similar quality. Dynamic mics are cheaper to mass produce than condenser designs.

Paired together, these two mics would likely be all you’d ever need for making high quality musical demos in a home setting. These mics would also be perfectly at home in a pro studio setting, should you decide to upgrade your studio in that direction in the future.
