The pro mic bundle for home recording

If you’re only buying two mics, here’s my choices for a fully professional home music studio mic bundle.

Rode NT2000

Rode NT2000 condenser microphone

This mic made the cut because of its many options for creative experimentation. You get a fully variable polar pattern knob: cardioid, figure 8, and omni, and options in-between those settings (a unique feature). You also get a high pass filter and a pad to help avoid clipping on louder sources. Lots of options for dialing in a good sound, all built right into the microphone.

Electro-Voice RE20

Electro-Voice RE20 dynamic microphone

This mic sounds great on most things, and is very easy to use: just point it, no getting fiddly. It’s a bit heavy, so you may want to use a counterweight, or place a 5lb gym weight or sandbags on your mic stand.

These are two very high-quality mics that are complementary to each other, and useful across a wide variety of home recording situations. You can grow into them for many years, and their quality is high enough to be useful in professional settings as well. If you decide to get into professional recording in the future and build out a full mic locker, these are a great foundation to build upon.
